Teeth Whitening

At Chappell Family Dentistry, when we ask our patients what they don’t like about their teeth, the most common answer is that they are not white enough.

Knowing that your smile doesn’t look its brightest can make you feel self-conscious enough that you want to hide your smile. Unfortunately, this can make you seem unhappy or unfriendly, which impacts your social and business interactions.

Why Your Teeth Discolor

Your teeth discolor over time because many of the foods and drinks we consume cause staining. While good home care and regular cleaning appointments help to maintain a white smile, deep stains sometimes need something more.

Whitening toothpaste and gum can help remove surface stains but these products do not have the ability to really whiten teeth deep down because they are not in contact with your teeth long enough. However, prescription-strength whitening gels can handle the job if they remain in contact for a long enough time.

Advantages of Professional Whitening

There are lots of commercially available whitening products and many that work quite well. The true advantage of professional take-home teeth whitening, however, comes from having a dentist who can fabricate custom trays that conform closely over your teeth and allow the gel to evenly cover all surfaces for uniform results.

The first step to a brighter smile is a visit to our office where Dr. Travis Dickey will take detailed impressions of your mouth. These impressions are used to fabricate models of your teeth, from which we create custom-fitted whitening trays.

Your new whitening trays are usually ready within a week, and we will have you return to our office for a try-in appointment. We check that the trays fit comfortably, then we will give you instructions on how and when to use the whitening gel.

Everyone has unique needs, but we typically recommend that our patients use the tray and gel daily for about 20 to 30 minutes. After two weeks you can expect to see a transformed smile that’s several shades brighter than when we started.
